With a silvery voice and expressive, dramatic stage presence, Korean Soprano Hye Jung Lee is quickly emerging as one of the opera world’s top young coloratura sopranos. She returned to San Francisco Opera to make her role debut as Fiakermilli in Arabella and as Ah Sing in the world premiere of Girls of the Golden West by John Adams, which she also sang at Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam.
Her repertoire includes Königin der Nacht, Gilda, Susanna, Rosina, Amor from Orphée et Eurydice, Woglinde from Das Rheingold, Drusilla in L’Incoronazione di Poppea, and Elvire in La Muette de Portici. She sang Papagena in Die Zauberflöte and Lisa in La Sonnambula with Florida Grand Opera, Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Madame Mao in Nixon in China with San Francisco Opera and New Zealand Opera, and Miss Lightfoot in Fellow Travelers at Minnesota Opera.
Ms. Lee made her debut at Issac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall as a soloist in Mozart’s Mass in C Minor followed by Bach’s Weihnachts Oratorio with St. Cecilia Orchestra and Chorus. With the Tucson Chamber Artists Chorus and Orchestra she has been featured in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. This season, she will sing the role of Contessa di Folleville, Lucia, Adele, and Sandrina at Theater Kiel. She will also make her English National Opera debut as Madame Mao in Nixon in China in 2021.
